Sarni, my small hometown, gifted me a rare chance to immerse myself in the untouched wilderness during a memorable bike ride and trek to Mathardev Mountain. It was the rainy season of 2009, and the Satpura hills were draped in lush greenery, their beauty magnified by the mist and gentle rains. Riding up to the foothills, I felt the anticipation building for the adventure ahead. As we began our ascent, the forest around us came alive with the soft patter of raindrops, a soothing soundtrack that accompanied our trek. The air smelled fresh, and the thick canopy overhead shielded us from the heavier downpour, adding to the serenity of the journey.
Upon reaching the top of Mathardev, we were welcomed by an unexpected but fascinating encounter—the “vanmanus,” our primate ancestors, curiously watching us from the trees. This moment added an almost mystical quality to the adventure. Sharing a secluded lunch spot with these creatures, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Satpura hills, felt surreal. The monkeys sat nearby, as if they too were partaking in the tranquility of the mountain. It was a humbling experience to be in such close proximity to nature’s raw and untamed spirit, a reminder of our deep, evolutionary connection to these distant relatives.
As we savored our simple meal, looking out at the panoramic views of the rain-soaked hills, a profound sense of unity with nature washed over me. The beauty of the Satpura range and the presence of the vanmanus made the trek unforgettable. This journey, a perfect blend of adventure and reflection, will forever remain etched in my heart as a powerful reminder of our shared ancestry and the enduring bond between humans and the natural world.
