Bike Ride From Sarni to Mohad: A Journey Through Madhya Pradesh’s Heartland Year 2009

In 2009, I embarked on a soul-searching journey that would become one of the most cherished adventures of my life. Being an adventure junkie, I often found solace on the open road, and this time, my destination was deeply personal—my grandparents’ homes in Mohad (Kareli) and Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh. Starting from Sarni, I set out on my trusty bajaj avenger bike for the 300+ km ride, eager to reconnect with my roots and seek blessings from my Nana-Nani and Dadi. The ride was not just about reaching a destination; it was an opportunity to experience the beauty of my home state. In my first leg to mohad, I traversed the Satpura jungles, crossed the mighty Narmada River, and passed through serene farmland, each moment became a memory etched in my heart.

The journey was both nostalgic and thrilling. The familiar single-lane highways reminded me of childhood trips on my father’s rugged Rajdoot during summer vacations. However, the road demanded focus—nazar hati, durghatna ghati (a moment’s distraction could lead to an accident). Riding through the dense Satpura forest between Sarni and Itarsi was magical, while crossing the long Sakkar River bridge near Hoshangabad (now Narmadapuram) felt surreal. Along the way, I gave a lift to a police officer, a random yet memorable interaction. The sights of bullock carts, sprawling farmland, railway crossings, and the sugar mill in Gadarwara added a rustic charm to the journey. By nightfall, I reached Mohad, thanking Lord Hanuman at the temple near the Mohad-Bagaur-Amgaon crossing before reuniting with my family.

Spending time with my Nana-Nani, Mama-Mami, and cousins felt like reconnecting with my roots and finding a sense of balance far from the corporate hustle. Sitting around an anghiti (bonfire), I shared stories of my ride and listened to theirs, fostering a deeper connection with my loved ones. That journey wasn’t just about the miles covered; it was about embracing freedom, achieving personal goals, and feeling grounded in the warmth of family and community. The adventure reminded me of the beauty of India’s landscapes and the importance of staying connected to our roots, making it one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life.
