Democracy, Education, and the Perils of Political Manipulation

A few days ago, I wrote about Democracy and Education, highlighting how some politicians deliver fake news and encourage their followers to take matters into their own hands, ostensibly to “SAVE” the constitution. My concern goes beyond a simple blog post; want to addresses the pervasive failure to curb fake news by politicians seeking to undermine the government or seize power at any cost, even through violence if necessary. This is not an issue confined to India but now a global cancer—wherever right-wing parties rise to power or leading, there’s an ominous narrative that democracy will collapse, constitutions will be torn apart, and voting will cease. John Locke would be ashamed to see democracy devolve into a means of violent power struggles by opposition forces against right-wing parties, contrary to his ideals of peaceful governance and social contract.

This fear materialized when I we saw the recent news about an assassination attempt on Donald Trump of America. During a speech, he was shot at close range. Fortunately, the bullet only grazed his upper ear, narrowly missing his head. Despite his injuries, this brave leader stood up, raised his fist, and reassured the public that he would not stop, continue to work for the greater good of Americans against all odds.

Root of Violence: Ideological Corruption

Why did this happen? How did a 20-year-old become so ideologically corrupted that he attempted to assassinate a former American president? This is no coincidence. It stems from the false education propagated by opposition politicians, who spread the narrative that if Right wing republican leader were re-elected, it would be the last democratic election in America, and the constitution would be destroyed. This is the same narrative we see globally directed towards right-wing parties.

Indian Context: A Mirror Image

I am deeply concerned about India, where opposition parties spread so much hate and fake news about the elected government of Narendra Modi that any positive action is portrayed as the death of the constitution. Instead of constructive criticism, they incite violent uprisings, endorse road blockages, and support violent means as legitimate expressions of anger against the government. The language used by leaders like Rahul Gandhi is far from civilised Indian community. Old videos shows how leader like Rahul Gandhi has incited youth to physically attack our Prime Minister, which is absurd. This ideology of anger is being forcibly instilled in the youth and non-Hindu communities by these leaders.

Threat of Ideological Violence

I am very concerned that it won’t be long before someone takes up arms against the ruling party. Today, fake news and misinformation spread like wildfire. Any ideological anger ignited by such propaganda could cause significant harm to the nation. I firmly believe in putting the country first, fostering national pride, fighting against corruption, holding the government accountable, and ensuring that administrative officials and the judiciary act impartially, keeping the citizens’ best interests in mind. Opposition parties should engage in constructive criticism for the better functioning of the nation.

Educating for a Better Democracy

Educating for a better democracy begins with a clear, constructive definition of the country’s philosophy and constitution. This involves comprehensive civic education that underscores the principles upon which the nation was founded, such as liberty, equality, justice, and the rule of law. Citizens should be taught to respect diverse viewpoints while staunchly opposing any actions that threaten the country or its people. Educational programs should emphasize critical thinking, media literacy, and the ability to discern between fact and misinformation. By fostering a culture of informed and engaged citizenship, we can cultivate a society where political discourse is constructive, leaders are held accountable, and democratic values are upheld. Respect for differing opinions, coupled with a firm stance against violence and divisive rhetoric, will help build a robust and resilient democracy.

I firmly stress on the importance of educating all citizens about democracy and the constitution. Informed decision-making is crucial to prevent violence and maintain a healthy democratic society. We must strive for a nation where every citizen understands their rights and responsibilities, holds leaders accountable, and fosters civil and constructive political discourse. False narratives from leaders like Rahul, Owaisi, Mamta… must be discarded. Only then can we safeguard our democracy and ensure a brighter future for all.
