Embracing the Wait: Life at Ghoradongri Railway Station Yr 2012

I have spent countless hours waiting at railway stations, much like millions of other Indians who rely on the Indian Railways as their daily lifeline. For those of us whose hometown stations have fewer train stoppages, the wait can be long and tedious. Passing the time often becomes a creative challenge—whether it’s watching fellow commuters, enjoying a cup of tea or snacks, or simply counting the bogies of passing trains. In 2012, I captured some of these moments on camera, preserving the beauty and simplicity of these waiting hours amidst the hustle and bustle of station life.

The footage I captured shows how even a seemingly monotonous wait can be a rich experience when seen through the lens of observation. Ghoradongri, my hometown station, may not have many train stoppages, but it has provided me with countless memories as I traveled to places like Bhopal, Rourkela, Delhi, and Bangalore. The station’s atmosphere, with the constant movement of people and trains, becomes a backdrop for reflection. You can see the small interactions, the anticipation of arriving or departing passengers, and the rhythmic flow of train travel that is such an integral part of India.

As I look back at these memories, I realize that the charm of waiting at a railway station lies in embracing the moment. The sounds, sights, and energy of a busy station offer a unique perspective on Indian life. Whether it’s a quiet rural station or a bustling city hub, each one has its own story. The experiences I captured at Ghoradongri station remind me that sometimes, simply being present in the moment is enough to make even the longest wait worthwhile.
