In my village of Mohad, we once had a gobar gas plant at our home, a symbol of sustainability and rural innovation. I had the chance to document its operation twice—once in 2009 and again in 2014—capturing the benefits it brought to our household. However, as LPG gas became more prevalent, gobar gas began to fade from use, and by 2016, the plant was eventually removed. Despite its decline, the gobar gas plant always serves as a reminder of the potential it held for clean, renewable energy in rural communities.

Gobar gas plants, which convert cattle dung into biogas, offer a sustainable energy solution that directly addresses both energy shortages and environmental concerns. By tapping into this natural resource, rural households like mine were able to meet daily cooking needs without relying on conventional fuels. These plants not only reduce methane emissions from livestock waste but also contribute to lowering carbon footprints, making them a key player in the fight against climate change. The simplicity and effectiveness of gobar gas plants underscore their importance as a practical alternative energy source, especially in villages where modern infrastructure is less accessible.

The removal of our gobar gas plant in 2016 was a sign of changing times, as LPG became the dominant fuel source. Yet, looking back, it’s clear that gobar gas plants were ahead of their time, offering an eco-friendly way to promote energy self-sufficiency. As the world increasingly turns towards renewable energy, the concept of gobar gas deserves renewed attention for its role in sustainable living. This green initiative remains a beacon of hope for rural development, providing a low-cost, environmentally conscious option for energy production, and paving the way toward a greener, more self-reliant future.
