In 2013, I embarked on one of the longest and most memorable bike rides of my life, spanning nearly two weeks. My journey took me through the spiritual atmosphere of Mahakumbh, the serene landscapes of Rewa and Panna, the sacred town of Maihar, and finally, the peaceful Sirmour. It was in Maihar that I had the profound opportunity to visit the revered Maa Sharda Devi temple.
According to the legends: Fearless warriors Alha and Udal, who once clashed with Prithvi Raj Chauhan, were devoted followers of Maa Sharda Devi. They are believed to be the first to visit her in the deep forests of Maihar, lovingly addressing her as ‘Sharda Mai.’ Over time, this name spread, and she became known as ‘Mata Sharda Mai.’
Alha, according to the folklore, spent 12 years in deep worship at the temple, eventually receiving the gift of immortality—amaratva—from the goddess herself. Behind the temple, tucked away downhill, lies the serene ‘Alha Pond,’ a place that still whispers tales of devotion. Not far from the pond, about 2 kilometers away, is an old akhara (wrestling ring), where Alha and Udal once honed their skills in the traditional art of kushti (wrestling). The air around these places feels alive with history and the deep reverence for Sharda Devi.
