In 2013, I embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to the Maha Kumbh Mela, an extraordinary spiritual event held every 12 years at the Sangam—the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers at Prayagraj. My nomadic yearly ritual of taking 1-2 weeks off for bike adventures had already taken me to various corners of India, but this time was special. Maha Kumbh is the world’s ultra largest spiritual gathering, drawing almost half billion of devotees from every corner of India and around the world. Earlier i had only heard stories from old Bollywood movies about this grand event lost brother and family.
I had planned my bike trip to coincide with the sacred Amrit Snan (Sahi Snan, Holy bath) on Maha Shivratri. Leaving my corporate life at PeopleStrong HR Tech behind for 2 weeks, I set off from Gurgaon on my trusted Bajaj Avenger. My route to Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) was broken up with stays in Noida and Kanpur, where I had the joy of reconnecting with friends before continuing my 700 km spiritual odyssey. In Kanpur, I experienced the bustling, overcrowded streets, where navigating my bike on Virahana Road was nearly impossible.

Experiencing the Grandeur of Maha Kumbh
As I rode into Prayagraj that evening, the city was alive with the buzz of Maha Kumbh. Meeting my friend Alok Gautam at Naini Bridge, I was instantly mesmerised by the illuminated pandals near Ganga–Yamuna river, the glow of spiritual fervor, and the sense of unity among millions of devotees. On the morning of Maha Shivratri, we left early in the dark for Sangam. We encountered many elderly couples along the way, receiving their blessings as we moved forward. Crossing the Ganga and Yamuna Sangam on the Pipa Pul—a floating, cylindrical makeshift bridge—at dawn was an unforgettable experience.
The constant announcements over the loudspeakers, reporting lost individuals and urging the crowd to guide them to the control room, vividly reminded me of the authenticity of scenes depicted in Bollywood movies. By 4 AM, we reached the Sangam, and the crisp morning breeze was unmistakable. Yet, the profound spiritual ambiance far outweighed the chill in the air, creating an experience that was truly mesmerizing. When I finally stepped into the icy waters of the Sangam for my Amrit Snan, a wave of tranquility swept over me. The freezing breeze couldn’t dampen the warmth of spirituality surrounding me as I prayed for blessings, prosperity, and the well-being of my family and our nation.
For three hours, we explored different areas of the Maha Kumbh, meeting various spiritual individuals who had gathered for this sacred bath. Witnessing them, I was struck by the grandeur of our cultural diversity. It wasn’t just people from Uttar Pradesh but from every corner of India, speaking different languages, united in their quest for purification on this auspicious occasion of the Maha Kumbh. Witnessing the sunrise over the sparkling waters of Sangam was a sight etched in my memory forever.

Reflections on Faith and Lessons Learned
The Maha Kumbh wasn’t just a spiritual experience; it was a reminder of the cultural diversity and resilience of our Sanatan community. As I roamed the mela for hours, meeting spiritual individuals, just showcased me the unity in diversity our country takes pride in. As the crowds grew exponentially for the Amrit Snan, the journey back turned into another adventure, with the roads and bridges packed with endless streams of devotees. It took hours to return, but I carried with me a sense of fulfillment and gratitude. This journey left me in awe of the faith that binds millions together and the power of spirituality. However, I couldn’t help but wish for better sanitation and management of such a grand event, so its sanctity and purity could truly shine. Despite its flaws, Maha Kumbh remains the most profound and unforgettable adventure of my life.
