In 2009, during a period of soul-searching, for some time I found myself in my home village, Mohad Kareli, Madhya Pradesh, reconnecting with the simplicity of rural life. One of the fondest memories was spending time on my Nana’s (grandfather’s) farmland. Nana, a well-known English teacher in the village, and my cousin brother, Piyush (Monu), joined me as we enjoyed carefree moments together. From splashing around in the bore well water to learning about the farm’s harvest, and even eating fresh sugarcane (ganna) straight from the field, the experience was a refreshing escape from the fast-paced life in NCR.
The beauty of nature and the village’s tranquility made this time even more special. One memorable moment was holding a lamb in my arms, as we playfully spent time with a herd of goats, soaking in the simplicity and purity of life on the farm. These little experiences, like tasting sugarcane or wandering around the fields, created a sense of connection to the land and reminded me of the peaceful joys that are so often lost in city life.
My Nana’s wisdom played a big role in shaping my understanding of the hard work and patience required to maintain a farm. He helped me grasp the challenges and the rewarding outcomes, offering life lessons that only elders can truly impart. The experience brought back vivid childhood memories, filled with countless hours spent on the farmland, reminding me of the strong bond we share with our roots and family.
