In 2009, during my soul-searching bike trip, I had the privilege of revisiting Newton, my father’s hometown, known for its historic coal mines. This English-named town owes its title to an English surveyor, Newton, who worked there during the British colonial coal mining era. My grandparents spent their lives working in these coal mines, and my father grew up in this vibrant community, surrounded by stories of its heyday. Childhood visits to Newton were filled with warmth, bonding with relatives, and reconnecting with friends in this peaceful town. This time, I reached Newton via Chhindwara, where my grandmother lived, to attend a family wedding along with Bua, Sister and (Jija ji) Brother-in-law, that offered a rare chance to reconnect with relatives and revive those cherished memories.

The wedding itself was a beautiful blend of tradition and modernity, from the rituals to the elaborate decorations and dining arrangements. Beyond the wedding festivities, I spent the following day visiting relatives’ homes, enjoying conversations over tea and snacks, which brought a nostalgic sense of belonging. Newton remains a serene town, untouched by the fast-paced city life, but its declining coal mining industry has left it largely populated by elders, as younger generations migrate to cities in search of opportunities. This stark reality struck me deeply as I rode through its quiet streets, reflecting on the town’s resilience and the need for revitalization.
My visit to Newton not only reconnected me with my roots but also ignited a renewed sense of purpose. The simplicity and history of the place reminded me of the importance of community and the need to work towards building a stronger, economically vibrant India. Those two days in Newton strengthened my resolve to contribute meaningfully to the country’s growth while keeping alive the values of family and heritage.
