Rubik’s Cube Challenge: Motivation and Creativity at PeopleStrong workplace Year 2012

In December 2012, I found an innovative way to break the monotony of office life and boost my team’s creativity at PeopleStrong HR Tech, sector 34 gurgaon office. As a leader, I firmly believe that regular motivation at workplace is crucial for employee retention—far more impactful than monetary rewards or occasional outings. To inspire creativity, innovation and out-of-the-box thinking, I personally organized a Rubik’s Cube challenge for my tech team. The premise was simple: solve the Rubik’s Cube, and the winner gets a hearty lunch treat on me. To make it inclusive, I offered smaller rewards for solving single or multiple faces, such as chocolates and breakfast. What started as a fun tech challenge soon spread across departments, with employees enthusiastically participating and even borrowing cubes to practice at home.

The energy in the office shifted dramatically as the challenge grew. I connected with employees from different teams, learning more about their personalities and quirks. Some even asked if I could solve the Rubik’s Cube myself, leading me to demonstrate solutions for single and multiple faces, and ultimately the whole puzzle. Over two weeks, the challenge created a buzz that rejuvenated the workplace, with small wins of chocolate and breakfast. On December 7, 2012, I celebrated our winners, Shivam Kumar and Piyush Saini, with a lunch treat filled with laughter, camaraderie, and delicious Indian cuisine.

These small initiatives reinforced my belief in the power of personal gestures over monetary compensation. They created an atmosphere of teamwork, motivation, and creativity, making the office more than just a place to work. This Rubik’s Cube challenge remains one of my fondest memories, reminding me of the importance of fostering connections and enthusiasm in the corporate hustle. My perosnal view, is such small gusture should be done by all the leaders

Note: I'm an Early Tech Member and Shareholder of PeopleStrong HR Tech, contributing to its growth and innovation during 2010–2017 and 2019–2022.
