Most of my childhood was spent in Sarni, a quaint town known for its massive electric power plant, the Tawa Dam Reservoir, and the stunning Satpura Hills, especially the revered Mathar Dev. From 2009 to 2012, I had several opportunities to document the power plant and its surroundings through the lens of my camera. These photographs now serve as a window to some of my most cherished memories—the everyday sights that I encountered as a child, whether it was walking to school, visiting the local market, or simply playing with friends. The landscapes, which once seemed ordinary, now hold an extraordinary significance.
The power plant in Sarni was much more than a workplace for the locals; it was the very heartbeat of the town. It powered not only the homes and industries but also the spirit of the people, playing a central role in everything from commerce to religious celebrations. Growing up around this colossal structure, I witnessed how it shaped the rhythm of life in Sarni, linking the industrial and the cultural seamlessly. The festivals, the gatherings, and the hum of everyday life were all tied to the plant’s continuous operations, making it a symbol of both progress and community in the region.
As I reminisce about those days, I often find myself longing for another visit to Sarni, to once again experience the carefree life of my youth. The town holds a timeless charm for me, and I wish to relive the simplicity and joy that defined my childhood. In my future visits, I hope to reconnect with the sights, sounds, and people that shaped my early years, revisiting not only the physical spaces but also the memories that make Sarni feel like home.
