Traditional Jaggery Production at Mohad Year 2015

I’ve always found solace in the simple yet rich experiences of village life in Mohad, Madhya Pradesh. One place that has always fascinated me is a small jaggery factory that springs to life after the sugarcane harvest. In 2015, I had the opportunity to visit a relative’s farm nearby with my cousin brother Monu, and that’s where I first witnessed this traditional process up close. The factory, built using age-old methods, became a place of both learning and nostalgia for me.

The factory’s production involves an intricate, fire-powered system where large containers are used to boil sugarcane juice, transforming it into thick molasses. The molasses is then carefully poured into molds to shape blocks of jaggery, weighing between 2 and 5 kg. These blocks are later packed and distributed based on vendor demands. Every time I visit, I find myself marveling at the simplicity of the process and the dedication it requires, from the boiling to the molding.

What truly makes this experience memorable for me is the chance to enjoy fresh sugarcane juice directly from the source. There’s something special about tasting the rich molasses and organic, handcrafted jaggery, knowing it’s been made using traditional, sustainable practices. It’s these little joys that keep me coming back to this jaggery factory whenever I spend time in my village.
